TRICARE COVID-19 Vaccination

Beneficiaries can get the COVID-19 vaccine from any civilian pharmacy at no charge, even non-netowrk pharmacies; but there are some things to keep in mind. 

Network Pharmacies:

  • You can get the vaccine at no charge from any TRICARE network pharmacy.
  • Contact your network pharmacy first to see when you can get your vaccine and what process they have in place.
  • To find a network pharmacy, visit https://militaryrx.express-scripts.com/findpharmacy.
 Non Network Pharmacies
  • You can get the vaccine at no charge from any non-network pharmacy – the pharmacy is not allowed to bill you. 
  • Non-network pharmacy coverage rules apply for medication (Non-vaccines).
  • If you get anything other than the COVID-19 vaccine, you’re responsible for that cost, based on your TRICARE plan.

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine

The CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/Moderna.html, has a full list of safety data regarding the Moderna Vaccine including who should get the vaccine and who shouldn't, side effects, demographics, how well the vaccine works (appr. 94%), and general information. 
 
Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine General Information: 
Name: mRNA-1273
Manufacturer: ModernaTX, Inc.
Type of vaccine: mRNA

Number of shots: 2 shots, one month (28-45 days) apart for full effectiveness
How given: Shot in the muscle of the upper arm
Ingredients*: The Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine contains the following ingredients: messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), lipids (SM-102, polyethylene glycol [PEG] 2000 dimyristoyl glycerol [DMG], cholesterol, and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine [DSPC]), tromethamine, tromethamine hydrochloride, acetic acid, sodium acetate, and sucrose.
*Does not contain Eggs, Preservatives or Latex.

 How it works

  • The Moderna vaccine generates immune response to the COVID-19 Spike Protein Impossible for the vaccine to cause COVID infection
  • The vaccine is appropriate and recommended even if you were infected with COVID previously.
  • Does NOT contain live or dead virus OR any virus pieces, mercury, aluminum or fetal tissue
 Common Side Effects / Adverse Reactions 
  • More localized symptoms (sore arm, lump, etc)
  • ​More systemic symptoms  (fever, fatigue, headache, chills, etc) – evidence of active immune system
  • Trend toward more symptoms after 2nd dose, or if previously infected with COVID
  • No significant difference in serious side effects (death, life-threatening event, anaphylaxis, birth defect, pregnancy loss, etc)

Contraindications

Caution is advised for people with severe allergies, consider vaccines given within 14 days, may not be as effective in people with immune disorders, consider patients with bleeding disorders (vaccine is given via injection), pregnancy (not tested in pregnancy, however, major fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, and obstetric societies recommend not withholding during pregnancy, restricted status for 48 hours for personnel on flight duty.

Do NOT get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine if you have:

  • Allergy to any vaccine components
  • A previous severe allergic reaction of the vaccine.
  • History of immediate reaction of ANY severity to a previous dose or ingredient of the vaccine (hives, face/lip swelling, or breathing difficulty within 4 hours of vaccination.)
Note:  You must be available locally to receive the second dose of vaccine. The vaccine will restrict flight at least 12 hours, contact your flight surgeon.  This vaccine is only approved in ages 18 and up.
