Winn paves way to improved patient relations, processes with newly established partnership council

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Winn Army Community Hospital took its first steps on the path to transforming beneficiaries’ relationship with the hospital Nov. 7 with a kickoff town hall-style meeting for its new patient-focused committee that beneficiaries can join and share their insights. The first meeting of Winn’s Patient and Family Partnership Council (PFPC), held in the hospital’s conference room, introduced the concept of and the reasons behind the council. Fifteen people participated, including the hospital commander, staff members, spouses, retirees, and others. The PFPC’s goal is patient-centered health care through identifying both areas of success and improvement at Winn.

In a demonstration of cooperation between Defense Health Agency, East, medical facilities, Winn Army Community Hospital provided critical care support to Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC) following the impact of Hurricane Helene throughout Augusta, Georgia. In the late hours of Sept. 29, six patients requiring continuity of care were transferred from DDEAMC to Winn Army Community Hospital via medical evacuation helicopters from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. Two nurses from DDEAMC accompanied the patients to provide in-flight care and additional staff support to Winn. Fort Stewart paramedics, Winn medical personnel, and 3rd CAB flight crew transfer a patient from the helicopter to a gunnery for movement to a waiting ambulance. Col. Margaret Berryman, the commander and director of Winn, praised the successful transfer of the patients and the additional staff from DDEAMC to her facility, emphasizing the strength of the military healthcare system. "The successful transfer of six patients from DDEAMC to our ‘Winning’ team’s care the other night via 3rd CAB HH-60M Black Hawks is a testament to the exceptional capabilities and dedication of our healthcare teams at both facilities,” Berryman said. “This collaborative effort underscores the importance of teamwork and mutual support within the military healthcare system, even in the face of ongoing challenges like the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We are confident that DDEAMC would be there for us if the tables were turned, and this transfer serves as a powerful reminder of our unwavering commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality patient care."

Winn ACH, 3rd CAB soar to DDEAMC’s rescue after Hurricane Helene impacts patient care

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Six patients were safely transferred from Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC) to Winn Army Community Hospital (Winn ACH) following severe infrastructure damage at Fort Eisenhower caused by Hurricane Helene. The patients were flown via HH-60M Black Hawk helicopters from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, after power outages and facility disruptions at Eisenhower left the hospital in need of immediate support to continue providing critical care.

Winn ACH celebrates addition of pharmacy clean room supporting patients, combat readiness

FORT STEWART, Ga. — A project eight years in the making had its ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 2 at Winn Army Community Hospital. With a celebration complete with oversized scissors, a purple ribbon, balloons, confetti and chocolate cake, staff and pharmacy specialists celebrated the official opening of the hospital’s inpatient pharmacy clean room. The facility ensures the safe preparation of sterile medicines, including intravenous drugs, for inpatient use.

Army Reserve medical unit helps Winn weather Debby, continue patient care

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Soldiers from the Army Reserve joined forces with their active-duty counterparts and civilian staff at Winn Army Community Hospital to maintain seamless operations in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby. Reservists from the 7459th Medical Operations Readiness Unit are currently undergoing training at Winn Army Community Hospital. The MORU provided continuity of patient care following the tropical storm.

Winn Army Community Hospital welcomes new commander

FORT STEWART, Ga. — Col. Jason Seery passed command of the U.S. Army Department Medical Activity and the directorship of Winn Army Community Hospital to Col. Margaret Berryman June 26 at Fort Stewart’s Cottrell Field. The ceremony of full military pomp and circumstance included sound-off and pass-in-review under the midmorning coastal Georgia sun. Berryman comes to Fort Stewart from the Medical Center of Excellence at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, where she served as the Army Nurse Corps Specific Branch Proponent Officer. Seery is moving on to a position at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The weeklong camp ended May 24 and included practices for other adaptive team sports as well as learning sessions about mobility, nutrition and sports psychology.

Army Sports Team Camp focuses on recovery, camaraderie, competition

With shouts of “ball ball ball!” and choreographed movements, 18 Soldiers and veterans in recovery ran rugby passing drills inside of Fort Stewart’s Newman Gym May 23. But instead of using their feet to run, the athletes used their hands to steer rugby wheelchairs specifically designed for the sport. All while looking for the next pass and catching it. It’s a combination of strength, coordination and teamwork. The 18 rugby athletes are part of a 40-Soldier team that practiced at Fort Stewart before competing for the Army in the DoD Warrior Games June 21-30 in Orlando, Florida. Winn Army Community Hospital’s Soldier Recovery Unit sponsored the Army team for an Army Sports Team Camp, part of the Army Recovery Care Program.
