Winn Army Community Hospital welcomes new commander

Col. Jason Seery passed command of the U.S. Army Department Medical Activity and the directorship of Winn Army Community Hospital to Col. Margaret Berryman June 26 at Fort Stewart’s Cottrell Field. The ceremony of full military pomp and circumstance included sound-off and pass-in-review under the midmorning coastal Georgia sun. Berryman comes to Fort Stewart from the Medical Center of Excellence at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, where she served as the Army Nurse Corps Specific Branch Proponent Officer. Seery is moving on to a position at the U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Army Sports Team Camp focuses on recovery, camaraderie, competition

With shouts of “ball ball ball!” and choreographed movements, 18 Soldiers and veterans in recovery ran rugby passing drills inside of Fort Stewart’s Newman Gym May 23. But instead of using their feet to run, the athletes used their hands to steer rugby wheelchairs specifically designed for the sport. All while looking for the next pass and catching it. It’s a combination of strength, coordination and teamwork. The 18 rugby athletes are part of a 40-Soldier team that practiced at Fort Stewart before competing for the Army in the DoD Warrior Games June 21-30 in Orlando, Florida. Winn Army Community Hospital’s Soldier Recovery Unit sponsored the Army team for an Army Sports Team Camp, part of the Army Recovery Care Program. The weeklong camp ended May 24 and included practices for other adaptive team sports as well as learning sessions about mobility, nutrition and sports psychology.

Avoiding sharp sticks, infections

When working in medical and dental spaces, there are sometimes risk of accidental skin puncture, when needles, dental burrs (the drill bits), scalpels, and other items – referred to as sharps are involved. Which means there is also the risk of infection.

Thoughts on milk pasteurization

The CDC notes while most stores sell only pasteurized milk, some dairies sell “raw” milk. Please consider that efforts to detect contamination in unpasteurized milk continues to improve; but low levels of bacteria remain a risk and can later cause illness. Use caution -- Stay healthy, stay informed.

TRICARE Authorizes Temporary Prescription Refill Waivers for Georgia due to Hurricane Idalia

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) announced that TRICARE beneficiaries in Georgia may receive emergency prescription refills now through Sept. 8, 2023, due to Hurricane Idalia. All counties are impacted.

Beware Mosquitos, reduce their threat

The mosquito season is beginning to ramp up and community members should be aware of mosquito-borne threats in our area and how to keep your family safe this summer. One disease to note this season is Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a rare disease spread to humans and horses by infected mosquitoes. Have Fun and Stay Safe This Summer

Spending time outside in the sun can help improve your mental and physical health. The sun can boost serotonin in the brain providing you with energy, a state of calmness, and help with being focused. The sun also tells our bodies when to increase and decrease melatonin, so the more time in the sun, the greater the production of melatonin at night to help improve the quality of sleep.  The Ultraviolet rays that come from the sun help also stimulate the production of vitamin D.  Vitamin D helps our body fight disease by boosting our immune system, improve our mental health, as well as promoting bone health. It can also lower the risk of having diabetes and high blood pressure. Vitamin D not only can come from the sun but also can be received through your diet such as fish, cereals, juices, dairy, and egg yolks.  However, while being outdoors there are also precautions to take for protection.
